Explanation - a telling of what is or what happened detail for detail.
Excuse - Is saying I did it but don’t look at me the universe fated that it happened while I was there and had to do something. Not my fault look over there… did I distract you enough that you think nothing of it?
An explanation is why you did something, an excuse is why you did something but it’s not your fault and you really shouldn’t be blamed because it’s really The Man’s fault. Or something like that.

Explanation: Conversing in a fashion to promote understanding of thoughts, theories, or actions.
Excuse: An explanation with apologetic and/or negative vibe.
Or in a nutshell…. An excuse is a type of explanation, but not all explanations are excuses.
